Published reports say the village is believed to be the first in the nation to adopt a local law restricting tobacco product displays in stores.

Tobacco Companies are marketing to kids and teens. They spend billions of dollars to market their deadly addictive products in stores. In New York State, the tobacco industry spends more than $1 million per day to market its products.

Buffalo Sabres announce changes to arena smoking policies

The Buffalo Sabres announced that smoking will not be permitted on First Niagara Center property starting September 1, 2012. In becoming a smoke-free facility, there will no longer be designated smoking areas on arena property and fans will not be permitted to smoke on the grounds during any games or events. The change in policy reflects local and national trends at sports venues and responds to an overwhelming number of fan requests.

Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market partners with the Erie-Niagara Tobacco-Free Coalition to promote a smoke-free environment

The Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market has partnered with the Erie-Niagara Tobacco-Free Coalition to promote a smoke-free environment at the market this season.

In addition, two Wellness Weekends will be held on July 14 and August 11. Visitors can participate in a wide variety of free health-related activities, from health screenings to an informal family Wellness Walk.

More WNY smokers are buying Indian-made cigarettes

A survey by Roswell Park Cancer Institute shows that more smokers in Western New York are buying cigarettes made on Indian reservations because of their significantly lower price than brand name products, and easy accessibility.

In Erie and Niagara counties, at least two-thirds of the cigarettes that smokers buy come from Indian reservations. These cheaper alternatives may be making it more difficult to get people to stop smoking.

Amherst approves ban on smoking on town property

Amherst Town Board has adopted a resolution that would ban smoking on town property. The designation forbids all smoking within town buildings and within 25 feet of the town’s public entranceways, windows and ventilation areas around the building. The resolution was co- sponsored by Council Member Guy Marlette and Supervisor Barry Weinstein.
