Every year 24,000 youth begin smoking in New York State alone, and exposure to tobacco marketing in stores is a primary cause of youth smoking. Point-of-sale tobacco marketing should be covered and out of sight.
Studies show that kids are twice as likely as adults to notice and remember retail tobacco advertising. And, since the tobacco industry spends millions of dollars a day to market its deadly products in stores where teens shop, our kids are exposed to high levels of tobacco marketing everyday.

Reducing the number of stores that sell tobacco makes prevention and cessation efforts more effective by decreasing social acceptability and changing the norm. Community Partnerships are working with pharmacies and grocery stores to stop selling tobacco products. Please join us. Tobacco Companies are marketing to kids and teens. They spend billions of dollars to market their deadly addictive products in stores. In New York State, the tobacco industry spends more than $1 million per day to market its products.
The “We’ve Seen Enough Tobacco” campaign is fighting back. Check out their featured video, Smoke Free (The Way 2 Be), produced by The Brooklyn Smoke Free Partnership and Global Kids in association with Chernak Media Group.

A survey by Roswell Park Cancer Institute shows that more smokers in Western New York are buying cigarettes made on Indian reservations because of their significantly lower price than brand name products, and easy accessibility.
In Erie and Niagara counties, at least two-thirds of the cigarettes that smokers buy come from Indian reservations. These cheaper alternatives may be making it more difficult to get people to stop smoking.
